Priest’s House

MachuPicchu, Perú

The Priest’s House is located in the Sacred Plaza of Machu Picchu, very close to the Temple of the Three Windows and the Main Temple, demonstrating its close connection to the city’s religious activities. This dwelling, with its simple yet meticulously constructed architecture, features well-worked stone walls, trapezoidal openings, and direct access to the temples, suggesting that it was occupied by a priest or a high-ranking spiritual figure responsible for leading the rituals and ceremonies in honor of Inti, the Sun God. From its strategic location, the priest could observe the sun’s movements and participate directly in the sacred celebrations.

In addition to serving as a residence, the Priest’s House fulfilled a ritual and ceremonial preparation function. It is believed that purifications and offerings were performed there prior to the main ceremonies in the adjacent temples. Its proximity to the most sacred spaces of Machu Picchu demonstrates the importance of the priestly role within Inca spiritual life and the seamless integration of the religious and the everyday. This house symbolizes the dedication and respect that the Incas professed to their deities, representing a permanent link between man, the Sun and the sacred forces of nature.
