Three Portals Group
MachuPicchu, Perú
The Three Portals Group is an architectural complex located in the urban sector of Machu Picchu, near the Main Plaza, and is distinguished by its three trapezoidal gateways, which give the complex its name. These gateways, constructed with finely carved stone and assembled without mortar, reflect the perfection and balance characteristic of Inca architecture. It is believed that this area was a high-ranking residence or an administrative center, possibly inhabited by priests or officials connected to the ceremonial activities of the plaza and nearby temples.
In addition to its structural value, the Three Portals Group holds profound ritual and social symbolism. The three entrances could represent the three worlds of the Andean worldview: Hanan Pacha (the upper world), Kay Pacha (the earthly world), and Ukhu Pacha (the inner or spiritual world). Its location and orderly architecture indicate that it was a transitional space between the sacred and the everyday, where residential, religious and possibly administrative functions were combined, reflecting the hierarchical and harmonious organization of life in the sacred city of Machu Picchu.
