Sacred Square

The Sacred Plaza of Machu Picchu was the most important religious and ceremonial center of the Inca city, where the main temples dedicated to sun worship and Andean deities were concentrated. It is surrounded by monuments of great spiritual value, such as the Main Temple, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the House of the Priest, forming an architectural ensemble of precision and harmony. Its open space, carefully leveled and delimited by stone walls, served as a setting for religious ceremonies, astronomical rituals, and community celebrations presided over by priests and possibly by the Inca himself during his stay in the city.

In addition to its ceremonial function, the Sacred Plaza held profound cosmic symbolism, representing the point of union between the earthly and spiritual worlds. From this place, the Incas observed the movements of the sun and the shadows cast by the temples during the solstices, using the plaza as a space of connection between architecture and the cosmos. The perfect integration between its buildings and the surrounding landscape reflects the Inca vision of balance and respect for nature, making the Sacred Plaza the spiritual heart of Machu Picchu and one of the most transcendental places in the sanctuary.
