Main Temple

MachuPicchu, Perú

The Main Temple of Machu Picchu is the most important ceremonial building within the Sacred Plaza, the religious heart of the Inca city. Constructed with enormous, finely carved granite blocks, precisely assembled, its U-shape, open to the east, allowed sunlight to enter during ceremonies dedicated to Inti, the Sun God. Trapezoidal niches stand out on its rear wall, where idols, offerings, and ritual objects were placed. The entire complex reflects the highest architectural level of the Inca Empire, reserved only for the most sacred spaces of worship.

This temple was a place of rituals and religious offerings, where priests and authorities celebrated ceremonies in honor of celestial deities and the apus, the protective mountains of the valley. During the solstices, the sunrise directly illuminated the interior of the temple, reinforcing its astronomical and spiritual connection with the Sun. Its monumental scale and central location demonstrate that the Main Temple was the religious and symbolic epicenter of Machu Picchu, a space where the power of the Inca, nature, and the divine converged.
