Temple of the Three Windows

MachuPicchu, Perú

The Temple of the Three Windows is one of the most emblematic and sacred structures of Machu Picchu, located in the area known as the Sacred Plaza, next to the Main Temple and facing the Intihuatana. Constructed with large, perfectly hewn granite blocks fitted together without mortar, it is notable for its three trapezoidal windows facing east, through which the light of dawn enters. Its design and location are not accidental: the windows were aligned with the sacred mountains and the path of the sun, symbolizing the birth of the Inca world and the relationship between humankind, nature, and the gods.

According to the Andean worldview, these three windows represented the three planes of the Inca universe: Hanan Pacha (the upper world of the gods), Kay Pacha (the earthly world), and Ukhu Pacha (the underworld or spiritual world). Furthermore, some chroniclers associate this temple with the legend of Tamputoqo, the mythical place from which the Ayar brothers, founders of the Inca lineage, emerged. Because of its monumental architecture and its profound symbolic charge, the Temple of the Three Windows was a ceremonial center dedicated to the Sun and the origin of the Inca people, a space where science, spirituality and architectural precision came together.
