Main Square

The Main Square of Machu Picchu was the social, ceremonial and political heart of the Inca city. Located in the center of the archaeological complex, it served as a connecting space between the two main sectors: the religious and the residential. Extensive and surrounded by temples, noble residences, and administrative structures, this plaza served as a meeting point for public ceremonies, religious festivals, and possibly for events in which the Inca himself participated. Its level and carefully defined surface demonstrates the importance of urban planning and the balance between architecture and the natural environment.

In addition to its social function, the Main Square had a deep symbolic and spiritual significance. It was the place where the unity between the people and the deities was manifested, a space that connected the surrounding sacred mountains with the Temples of the Sun and the Intihuatana. From here, the main sacred landmarks of Machu Picchu could be observed, making the plaza a stage for ritual and ceremonial gatherings. In essence, the Main Square represented the vital and spiritual center of the sacred city, where the Inca community celebrated the harmony between man, nature, and the gods.
