Botanical Garden
MachuPicchu, Perú
Few people know that the Machu Picchu sanctuary boasts two beautiful botanical gardens. Among the most exquisite ornamental species are orchids, many of which are endemic. Machu Picchu has a great variety of wild flora, including orchids, ferns, and shrubs.
This small garden often goes unnoticed by visitors to Machu Picchu, despite being located in one of the most visited areas of the citadel. Travelers, often rushed by their guides, don’t stop to observe this small but beautiful garden, unaware of what they are overlooking. It is located a few meters from the Temple of the Three Windows, one of the most important sites in the wonder of Machu Picchu. It is believed that this area was used in the same way during the Inca city’s heyday to showcase the diverse flora of the region.
This botanical garden features more than 100 varieties of flowers and plants. Among them you will find around 50 types of orchids, as well as some of the plants found during the excavations at Machu Picchu, such as avocado, yucca, lucuma, and cherimoya. This garden measures 15 meters long by 3.5 meters wide and is a smaller version of the botanical garden located outside Machu Picchu.
