Entrance Door
MachuPicchu, Perú
The Entrance Gate of Machu Picchu was the main and controlled entrance to the sacred Inca city. Located in the southern sector, at the end of the Inca Trail leading from Inti Punku (Sun Gate), it was the only formal access to the urban interior. Its construction showcases Inca architectural perfection: a trapezoidal opening with a monolithic lintel and lateral holes where wooden crossbeams were placed, allowing it to be completely closed, demonstrating its importance as a control point.
In addition to its administrative and security function, the gate held profound ritual and symbolic significance. It represented the transition from the outside (profane) world to the inside (sacred) space, where the Inca, the priests, and the solar deities resided. Crossing it was a spiritual act: a step into the world of the gods, marking the beginning of the ceremonial journey within the sacred city of Machu Picchu.
