Funerary Rock

MachuPicchu, Perú

The Funerary Rock of Machu Picchu, also known as the Ceremonial Rock, is located at the top of the archaeological complex, near the Guardhouse, in the agricultural sector. Carved directly from the bedrock, it has a flat, sloping surface that would have served as an altar for funerary ceremonies or mummification rituals. Its location and shape suggest that this space was used to honor the dead and make offerings to the Sun or the apus (mountain spirits), maintaining the connection between earthly life and the spiritual world, the Ukhu Pacha. From there, one has a privileged view of the city and the sacred landscape, reinforcing its ritual character.

This rock not only served a funerary function but also a symbolic and astronomical one. Its orientation and the way it receives sunlight during certain times of the year indicate that it may have been used in ritual observations related to the cycle of life and death. In the Andean worldview, death did not represent an end, but a transformation into another dimension of existence, and spaces like the Funeral Rock allowed for the maintenance of balance between both worlds. Therefore, this place was considered sacred and a site of spiritual transition, where the soul prepared for its journey to the afterlife under the protection of Inti (the sun god) and the guardian mountains.
