Quarry Area
MachuPicchu, Perú
These are rustic structures that likely served as dwellings for the guardians of the main gate, as well as for the stonemasons, carvers, and stoneworkers, since the quarry is very close to this group of buildings.
Archaeological excavations have uncovered pots, plates, water vessels, small bowls, a stone mill, and burnt earth; these suggest that food was cooked for large numbers of people and that chicha (a fermented beverage) was prepared there (excavations by Julinho Zapara). Numerous tools and very hard stones were also found in this area.
This quarry area displays a variety of carved or semi-carved rocks, with cuts for construction, including channels, recesses and protrusions, partially cut rocks, and ramps for moving them. The structures in this area are directly related to the suppliers of construction materials for the different zones or groups of buildings within the city of Machu Picchu.
