Royal Tomb

MachuPicchu, Perú

The Royal Tomb of Machu Picchu, also known as the Royal Crypt, is located directly beneath the Temple of the Sun, in the religious sector of the sacred city. Carved directly into the bedrock, it features refined architecture, with trapezoidal niches and sculpted altars, where it is presumed that funerary ceremonies and offerings were made to members of the Inca elite, possibly even to the Inca himself or a high priest. Its location beneath the Temple of the Sun reinforces the idea of a connection between the world of the living and the spiritual world, thus uniting the earthly with the divine.

This space served a ritual and symbolic function of great importance, as the Incas believed that high-ranking deceased individuals retained their vital energy and continued to protect the city from Ukhu Pacha, the underworld. Inside, remains of offerings, ceramics, and vestiges of rituals were found, suggesting a ceremonial funerary use. The Royal Tomb, together with the Temple of the Sun, formed a sacred complex dedicated to the worship of ancestors and the Sun, showing the deep Inca spirituality and their respect for life after death.
