Temple of the Sun
MachuPicchu, Perú
The Temple of the Sun is one of the most emblematic and sacred structures of Machu Picchu, built atop a large natural rock in the religious sector of the city. Its distinctive semicircular shape, with walls of finely carved and precisely fitted stone, demonstrates the high level of Inca architecture. Inside, there is an altar carved from the bedrock, where offerings and ceremonies were performed in honor of Inti, the Sun God. During the June solstice, the first rays of dawn enter through one of its trapezoidal windows and illuminate the altar, demonstrating its astronomical and ritual function.
Beneath the tower lies a small underground chamber, known as the royal tomb or crypt, which was likely associated with funerary rituals for high-ranking individuals. The Temple of the Sun was not only a solar observatory but also a sanctuary of great spiritual power, where ceremonies were held to ensure harmony between the Sun, the Earth, and humankind. Its strategic location, overlooking the valley and the Urubamba River, reinforces the idea that this temple was the center of solar worship and a symbol of the divine connection in the sacred city of Machu Picchu.
