Water Mirrors

MachuPicchu, Perú

The Water Mirrors of Machu Picchu are two delicate circular pools carved directly into the rock. They served as reflecting surfaces where Inca priests observed the sky, the stars, and the movement of the sun. Thanks to their strategic position, the still water acted as a natural mirror, allowing for precise astronomical observations and ceremonies related to the agricultural calendar and solar cycles.

In addition to their astronomical function, the Water Mirrors held profound spiritual symbolism. In the Andean worldview, the reflection of the sky in the water represented the union between the celestial world (Hanan Pacha) and the earthly world (Kay Pacha). These mirrors were, therefore, sacred instruments for connecting with the deities, where priests could «read» the messages of the cosmos. Their simplicity and precision reflect Inca wisdom and spirituality, which integrated nature, science, and faith in perfect harmony.
